Schiaparelli SS 2020 Haute Couture Show

Orion Kendal

From the first look that stepped onto the runway it was clear this Haute Couture show by Schiaparelli would be nothing short of excellence. The Schiaparelli SS 2020 collection presented statement earrings, power suits and very tasteful color blocking, but behind it all was a much deeper theme.

Roseberry drew inspiration from the women he had long admired, including his mother, sisters and friends. For Schiaparelli Spring/Summer 2020, he translated their complexity into clothes that expressed both independence and sensuality. Relaxed suits projected assurance, while embellished gowns brought a more theatrical expression of confidence.

Schiaparelli SS 2020 The Surrealist and the Seductress

For his second haute couture collection at Schiaparelli, Roseberry explored the freedom to inhabit contradictory identities. Titled “Double Fantasy,” Schiaparelli SS 2020 channelled the house’s surrealist spirit through Elsa herself: an independent creative force who understood the pleasure of making an entrance. Her complexity gave the clothes their direction: dressing could express an inward life while also becoming a public performance.

These two personas, the Surrealist and the Seductress, created a dialogue throughout the collection. Rather than reducing femininity to a single character, Roseberry allowed wit, ambition and allure to coexist. The wearer could decide which part of herself stepped forward.

That tension emerged through texture. Relaxed daytime suits used lightweight wool in chocolate, butterscotch, cream and navy, while evening silhouettes introduced silk faille, satin and saturated royal blue. This evolution in texture defined Schiaparelli SS 2020, expressing different registers of confidence, from the ease of loose tailoring to the deliberate spectacle of sculpted eveningwear.

Jewellery Beyond the Expected

Jewellery, meanwhile, refused to stay in its designated places. Roseberry scattered adornment across the body, placing it on arms, collars and even eyelashes. Slender brass forms recalled Alberto Giacometti’s elongated figures, while sparkling ribs and hipbones revisited the anatomical mischief of Elsa’s 1938 Skeleton Dress.

These details made the relationship between clothing and the body more interesting. Embellishment followed bones, interrupted surfaces and encouraged the eye to move beyond the usual necklace or earring. Schiaparelli’s surrealist heritage became something tactile, built into the experience of wearing the clothes.

Elsewhere, a white suit revealed a sweeping fuchsia train, bringing the house’s signature shocking pink into dramatic conversation with tailoring. These unexpected combinations gave the collection its bite. Beneath the glamour was a collection that allowed its wearer to be elusive, playful and sensual.

“My own dream, always, is to make the women I dress feel seen,” Roseberry wrote in his collection notes. With Schiaparelli SS 2020 Couture, he gave that ambition a clear expression, recognising that a woman’s private imagination deserves as much attention as the entrance she makes.
