The Jasper Conran Collection LFW SS19
Natasha Hall
Jasper Conran held a spectacular fashion show at the Royal Academy in London, delivering a powerful and timely collection.
Jasper Conrans’s show drew inspiration from the ongoing battle for equality, which gained renewed urgency after a year dominated by revelations of the mistreatment of women in Hollywood, Westminster, and the media. As a result, the collection felt both politically aware and deeply personal, echoing Jasper Conran’s unique vision.
Fashion Inspired by Equality and History
The designer subtly referenced this theme through carefully chosen details. For example, a striking splash of blue on one outfit symbolised hope, resilience, and change. This was especially significant as the show coincided with the centenary of the women’s suffrage movement. One hundred years have passed since the 1918 Representation of the People Act granted women the right to vote, marking a crucial moment in British history.
Moreover, Jasper Conran has a personal connection to this struggle. He recalls his mother actively lobbying for women’s rights, and this influence was clearly reflected throughout the collection, embodying Jasper Conran’s dedication. Consequently, the show acted as both a tribute to past achievements and an acknowledgment of the ongoing fight for equality. The central questions of the collection focused on how fashion can empower women, what it should reveal, and what it should conceal.
A Bold and Celebratory Collection
In addition, the stylish simplicity of the designs captivated the audience from start to finish. Clean lines, confident silhouettes, and refined tailoring created a sense of quiet strength. When a shimmering silver dress appeared on the runway, the audience responded with audible gasps, highlighting the emotional impact of the collection fashioned by Jasper Conran.
Overall, Jasper Conran delivered a bold, celebratory, and visually stunning fashion show. By blending elegance with meaning, he reminded the audience that fashion can be both beautiful and powerful. Truly, his designs remain remarkable.
