An Assembly of Gesture: the engine of doing and a method of composition

Conceived through a dialogue between choreographer Christian Rizzo and curator Anne-Laure Lestage, An Assembly of Gestures (Episode 1) inaugurates an exhibition cycle centred on gestures.

Presented at Magasins Généraux (1 Rue de l’Ancien Canal, Pantin) as part of the CND’s off-site programme, An Assembly of Gestures (Episode 1) is a series of performative events. These events create opportunities to experience a dialogue between dance, craft and cooking. These are gestures common to all, but which, when seen differently, open poetic worlds.

Centre National de la Danse

Invited artists will intervene at the Centre National de la Danse in the presence of the audience firstly. Their practices share a sensitive approach to manual work. Secondly, they also focus on the transformation and arrangement of materials, understood as a performative act.

By articulating choreographic, craft and domestic practices, An Assembly of Gestures (Episode 1) asks how doing can become form. Additionally, it restores to gesture its value as thought and connection.

The exhibition An Assembly of Gestures (Episode 1) will be open to the public until May 24, 2026. Every Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 pm, to begin with, visitors are welcome to join one of the guided tours. On April 4, 2026, the event will host artists Vânia Vaneau and Jordi Galí with their costume-making workshop Carnaval. Lei Saïto will be present on May 7, 2026, with her work Paysage comestible, which takes the form of spectacular edible creations. The last event in the programme is 1km De Danse, a day of celebration that brings together the residents of Pantin through dance. It will take place on May 23rd.

Assembly of Gestures transforms everyday gestures into a universal language. Dance, craft and cooking intertwine in a living poetic dialogue. Until May 24, 2026, the Centre National de la Danse invites you to rediscover doing as art.
