Where Denim Meets Digital Imagination, There is KSENIASCHNAIDER
KSENIASCHNAIDER has built a distinctive place in contemporary fashion by transforming denim into a field of experimentation where upcycling, unexpected silhouettes, and digital-inspired aesthetics converge. Through collections such as Think Inside the Box, the brand challenges conventional ideas of clothing, blending humor, imagination, and innovation to explore new ways of seeing and wearing fashion.
IRK: KSENIASCHNAIDER is now internationally recognized for redefining denim throughunexpected silhouettes and upcycling. How did denim become the central language of your creative identity?
KSENIASCHNAIDER: Denim became a brand language almost by accident. Ksenia has always been passionate about jeans and has a personal collection of vintage pairs collected over many years. When the brand was started, some of the first garments were made from reworked vintage denim. We loved the idea that every piece already had a history before becoming something new. So that mindset eventually grew into the brand’s entire design philosophy.
IRK: Your creations often transform everyday garments into experimental and surprising pieces. What attracts you to the idea of deconstructing and reconstructing familiar clothing?
KSENIASCHNAIDER: We are interested in giving ordinary things a second life. That’s why our brand philosophy says: “Turn everyday into a statement like you’ve never seen before. Turn re-worked pieces into a statement to be worn again”.
IRK: With Think Inside the Box, you reverse the expression “think outside the box” by literally integrating the idea of the box into the garment itself. How did this concept first emerge?
KSENIASCHNAIDER: It started as a joke, obviously. But then we started thinking about observing virtual spaces. Digital fashion is usually trying to imitate reality. And we wanted to reverse the direction and bring digital imperfections into the physical world.
IRK: The collection draws inspiration from Roblox avatars, low-poly aesthetics, and the limitations of digital environments. What fascinated you about translating this virtual universe into physical and wearable silhouettes?
KSENIASCHNAIDER: Digital environments have limitations, but limitations often create interesting aesthetics. The biggest challenge was figuring out how to make such rigid shapes work on a real body. It became a process of balancing structure and wearability, almost like solving a puzzle.
IRK: Your silhouettes often play with distorted and almost unreal proportions. What role do imbalance and sculptural experimentation play in your creative process?
KSENIASCHNAIDER: A lot of our work comes from questioning established rules. Why should a jacket have this shape? Why should a pair of jeans follow these proportions? It helps us discover new possibilities within ordinary clothes.
IRK: Despite the conceptual and sometimes playful nature of your collections, your pieces remain deeply rooted in denim, a material traditionally associated with everyday wear and workwear. What do you find interesting in this tension between ordinary clothing and radical forms?
KSENIACSHNAIDER: We like starting with something extremely familiar. Everybody knows what the jeans is and how they look. The more ordinary the starting point is, the more surprising the transformation can become.
IRK: Your collections frequently combine humor, irony, and deeper reflections on contemporary society. Do you see fashion as a form of storytelling or even social commentary?
KSENIASCHNAIDER: We believe that fashion reflects the world around it whether it wants to or not.
IRK: Beyond the experimental aesthetic of Think Inside the Box, do you also see the collection as a reflection on digital identities, avatars, and the ways we represent ourselves today?
KSENIASCHNAIDER: We think the collection is less about technology and the digital world itself and more about imagination. Indeed, digital worlds allow people to become whoever they want. Likewise, fashion has always done the same thing.
