Cheney Chan Blooming Elegance – Haute Couture 2024
The beginning of a fairy tale by Cheney Chan started with dimmed lights glimmering onto the high volts of a majestic organ. A light breeze swifting through the room, the spectators are seated and the anticipation peaking. A light melody starts playing. Then, a fairylike, elegant silhouette glides out of the shadow, advancing towards us.
Chinese folklore tales
Inspired by Chinese folklore tales as well as nature’s flora and fauna. The designer reimagines protagonists from ancient fairy tales, into modern glorious beings. Like a gathering of protagonists from different tales meeting on the podium, the models graciously valse with each other. Each embodying different values of courage, charm, resilience, purity, etc…
Using a technique true to his DNA. Cheney Chan emphasizes movements and shapes with his delicate layering of different textiles into voluptuous shapes. These shapes surround the models like flower petals or butterfly wings. This intricate crafting of different fabrics continues a recurrent pattern or trademark, already observed in his previous works. Not to omit the inspiration behind this technique. The designer draws from the texture you may find on traditional Chinese pottery, which is a subtle homage to his heritage. We can also note some pieces incrusted with diamonds, becoming a repeated signature look of the designer.
From light hues of pastel pinks, greens, and blues; to more vibrant yellows and reds. Cheney Chan dresses all kinds of women into modern-day elegant and graceful works of art. His creations range from elegant and sleek looks, to extravagant dresses and capes. The designer even ventures into modest looks. These suits any preferences, whether stylistic or religious, such as these elegant yet modest garments.
We see princesses and queens, all characters with diffrent stories and personalities, some strong and powerful, others graceful and delicate. Men and Women from fairy tales reimagined by the designer to take over our modern times. Each character tells their own story…
Coco Rocha wears Cheney Chan
Cheney Chan doesn’t remain on the runway. In this modern world, his creations find their way onto the red carpets of worldwide famous events such as the festival de Cannes. Indeed some of the creations from this year’s runway found their way onto this red carpet, to the spotlight and paparazzis. You may recognise the infamous green and white calla lily dress worn by Coco Rocha to this year’s red carpet.
Like a blooming bouquet, this year’s creations elegantly blend together into an elegant “bouquet final”. This vision is crowned by the walk of miss Coco Rocha in a lavish rosy dress, almost drowning in an ample abundance of feathers.
As this this beautiful tale comes to an end, the designer joins her, greeted by the aplause of the audience.
