Fragrance – time to switch it up
Sharon Whiting
Like fashion, Fragrance moves with the seasons.
As the Northern Hemisphere cools, our senses instinctively crave warmth, depth and intensity. Spices, woods and resins take on new appeal. Floral enthusiasts may be drawn to something more daring a lush, creamy tuberose or a rich, aromatic rose. Greedy gourmand lovers start seeking indulgent, edible notes of chocolate, caramel and tonka bean. Fortunately, the world of perfume has a solution for all our fragrance desires!

Bring on the incense
Amouage Purpose 50 is an invitation to turn the gaze inwards and contemplate the wonders of frankincense in all its mineralic, resinous and mystical glory. This, combined with earthy sand vetiver, warm papyrus and leathery, dry saffron makes for an opulent, almost regal scent with a touch of sweet vanillin to remind the wearer not to take themselves too seriously!

Cosy on down
Warm and enveloping, Ostens Cashmeran Velvet, features a cosy combination of ingredients selected to imitate the texture of velvet and the softness of cashmere for a sense of calm and contentment. Perfect for hunkering down by the fire, champagne in hand, to watch your favourite movie.

Carnal second skin
Hypnotic, voluptuous and powerful, tuberose has a sensual, creamy quality that makes it hard to resist. Nishane Tuberóza X, built around an exquisite Indian Tuberose Absolute, is a bold and attention-grabbing fragrance that is completely addictive.

In search of a fragrance with intimacy
Jovoy Rouge Assasin, in its newly designed bottle, has all the powdery nuances of a carmine, voluptuously intense lipstick. Rose, Ambrette and Iris lead the charge with touches of bergamot, elemi, tonka bean and warm woods to round out this delicious scent.

Keeping fragrance sweet
Astrophil and Stella have burst on to the fragrance scene with a stable of powerhouse perfumers who have crafted a collection of astonishingly beautiful fragrances. Paris Cheri is a love letter to the city of light. Mouthwatering notes of coffee, cocoa and vanilla capture the joyous scent of the patisseries that dwell on every corner, while intense notes of wood, resin and spices bring a beautiful complexity. Floral and berry accords add a touch of freshness.

Fashion first
Fugazzi, the fragrance brand for fashion lovers seeking an extra layer of ‘cool’ knocks it out of the park with the extravagantly intense Passionfroudh. Tropical fruits and spicy ginger are balanced by the warmth of black tea while intriguing, complex oudh Assafi gives a smoky, deeply woody and seductive twist to this iconic scent.

As empowering as it is comforting, Sharon believes that fragrance has the power to change the way we feel about the world – an armour for when we need to be strong, a cocoon for when we need to rest. Her own fragrance collection is indecently large but there is always space for something new!
Having lived all over the world - including extended stints in Paris, Marseille, Hong Kong and Sydney - Sharon now calls Brighton, on the South Coast of England, her home. When not championing Brighton’s burgeoning fragrance scene, she runs a gallery with her partner, showcasing the work of both established and emerging artists.
