G-STAR Anatomic Denim

A New Chapter in the History of the Brand G-STAR

G-STAR has always pushed the boundaries of denim innovation. In 1996, G-STAR launched the Elwood, introducing anatomical construction and changing the way designers created jeans. Today, nearly three decades later, the brand continues this legacy with Anatomic Denim, a project that combines fashion, visual storytelling, and art.

The History of G-STAR and the Elwood

In the 1990s, denim production focused on washed and treated fabrics, which offered comfort but lacked structure. Pierre Morisset, former head designer, drew inspiration from rugged motorcycle pants shaped by wear and weather. He reimagined these using raw denim, innovative seams, and inserted panels to sculpt jeans around the body’s natural contours. As a result, this created the iconic G-STAR Elwood, which combined freedom of movement with a worn in look.

Artists such as Pharrell Williams, Justin Bieber, and Jaden Smith wore the Elwood. It became one of the most sold jeans in history, disrupted the industry, and defined G-STAR’s DNA. Over the years, the Elwood has evolved while keeping signature elements such as diagonal seams across the thighs, ergonomic knee pads, heel guards, a forward-tilted saddle patch, and anatomical tailoring. Special editions included the Nettle version in 2010 and 15 Years of 3D Denim in 2011. Additionally, a regular and loose fit was released in 2023. Moreover, a unisex low waist loose fit came out in 2025. The Elwood continues to inspire designers worldwide with its forward-thinking construction and iconic style.

G-STAR Anatomic Denim

On September 23, 2025, G-STAR unveiled Anatomic Denim, a bold initiative merging design, movement, and artistic expression. Inspired by the human body’s anatomy and motion, the project centers on three complementary pillars. These include a new denim collection, an international campaign by Jordan Hemingway, and a monumental sculpture by Darwin, Sinke & van Tongeren.

The Campaign: Movement in Its Purest Form

The campaign, titled Movement in Its Purest Form, was created by Jordan Hemingway, renowned for his work with Gucci, Prada, and Maison Margiela. In particular, it features a gymnast, a pole dancer, a cyclist, and a calisthenics performer, all shown without their usual apparatus. This approach emphasizes pure movement, with denim engineered to move in harmony with the body. Furthermore, Hemingway described the project as “an exciting creative and technical challenge, which we overcame together with the team.” He praised “G-STAR’s strong heritage and constant desire to reinvent itself and push boundaries”.

The Product Collection: Anatomic Denim

The Anatomic Denim collection is designed to follow the body’s natural lines. Key pieces include the Contor, a futuristic reinterpretation of the Arc with sculpted architectural lines. Additionally, the Kitoh emphasizes musculature with engineered seams that trace the body’s contours. The G-STAR Elwood has been reimagined for 2025 with precise anatomical tailoring.

Chief Brand Officer Gwenda van Vliet explains that “Anatomic Denim is a new step in the evolution of denim at G-STAR”. Moreover, we don’t just create clothes for the body; we design them with it in mind. By combining our 3D construction principles with artistry and craftsmanship, we create denim that’s raw, expressive, and unapologetically G-STAR,” she adds then. The collection is available from September 23, 2025, at selected stores and online. Prices range from 119,95 € to 300 €.

The Art Installation: The Denim Gorilla

Completing the project is The Denim Gorilla, a 3.5-meter sculpture made entirely from denim by Darwin, Sinke & van Tongeren. The artwork explores anatomy and structure on a monumental scale. The sculpture has appeared at the Art Zoo Museum in Amsterdam, at Amsterdam Fashion Week, and at CIFF Copenhagen. These display, therefore, highlight the artistic ambition of the Anatomic Denim project.

The Legacy Continues

Anatomic Denim is more than a clothing line; it is a celebration of the human body and the way clothing interacts with movement. It builds on G-STAR’s long-standing philosophy of creating garments that not only fit the body but also enhance its natural dynamics. The project combines innovation, artistry, and storytelling. It marks a milestone in the brand’s history.

With its groundbreaking campaign, visionary collection, and monumental artistic statement, Anatomic Denim reinforces G-STAR’s position at the forefront of denim design. It celebrates movement, art, and the human form, ensuring G-STAR remains a trailblazer for generations to come.
