At its core, “Immortal” is not about fantasy or escape. It returns to something more grounded, the idea that there is a part of each person that cannot be erased or defeated. Scarlett builds this concept through contrast, shaping tension and release into a sound that feels both controlled and expansive.

The visual world surrounding the single extends this same language. Shot in stark, elemental environments and expanded through AI, the video favors atmosphere over perfection. Black sand, water, and shifting textures construct a landscape that feels unfamiliar yet deliberate. Together, the music and visuals frame “Immortal” as a statement on endurance, not as an abstract idea, but as something lived, physical, and undeniable.

IRK: “Immortal” suggests more than survival. It feels like a mindset. What does being “immortal” mean to you personally?

Scarlett: I think the “mindset” of IMMORTAL is in the definition of the word “Immortal”: that which doesn’t die. I’m singing to and about that within a person which cannot be killed, no matter what it comes up against. So maybe the mindset is “unstoppable”.

IRK: How did “Immortal” begin, was it a lyric, an idea, or a feeling first?

Scarlett: The song began out of the idea of wanting to write a song that felt inspiring and motivational, a song that made me want to defy odds, push boundaries, a song to workout to. What was the MOST inspiring thing I could think of? What made me feel EPIC. Writing Immortal came out of craving that song to listen to.

IRK: The song suggests that nothing external can fully defeat what’s inside. Where does that kind of inner force come from for you?

Scarlett: The inner voice is the WHO not the what. It’s not what you do, the people in your life, what you like, where you live, etc. YOU are the one creating all that. It’s not definable but we all recognize it in each other. The inner voice is the who.

IRK: The line between reality and illusion feels blurred in the song. Do you think we always see things as they truly are?

Scarlett: I think, in a lot of ways, reality is illusion and illusion is reality so… that makes sense that you think the line is blurred in this song. It is. Reality is something we create every day and it is a unique experience for each person despite often being, arguably, the same. You can see that clearly in how two different people can have a totally different experience when listening to the exact same song.

IRK: Is becoming “immortal” in your sense more about reclaiming something than becoming something new?

Scarlett: Cool question. Neither. It’s something that’s always there; it never left. The idea is that You/I/We were always incredible and capable of making it through whatever comes our way. The song is simply a reminder of that.

COLLECTIVE & IDENTITY

IRK: You move from “I” to “we” in the chorus. Who is included in that “we”?

Scarlett: Oooh fun question and I never thought about it, it’s just how the song came out. I think I chose “I” in the version not to mean specifically “me” but more to put anyone else into the intimacy of that personal pronoun. Kinda like when you read a book, even though the main character isn’t you, you often place yourself in their shoes in some regard. And I chose the “we” for the choruses to elevate the perspective of the song out of a singular experience but into a reminder to anyone listening that they are not alone. We all are strong and powerful and resilient. Also… I mean… if I sang “I am Immortal” I think the song would really take on a different tone eh? Yikes…

IMMORTAL SOUND & PERFORMANCE

IRK: Your vocal delivery feels both powerful and controlled. How did you approach recording it?

Scarlett: Great question, there were a lot of ways I could sing this song and I made specific choices in this one which I don’t always do in my songs.

I wanted the verses to feel a little sinister but also playful, like you’re not sure where this is going. Is this a revenge arc? Or a rise-above-it arc? So I chose a sort of breathy, sassy tone. Like someone who you’re not sure is the good guy or the bad guy in the story.

I wanted it to be clearly a confident and strong tone though. For the choruses I wanted a big, confident, full-voice tone. And for the bridge I wanted it to be deceptively pretty until the last line where you’re reminded that it’s not all roses, and even beautiful roses have thorns. This song has bite.

My favorite vocals are the big belts at the end that rise out above the big guitar solo. They give the song the levity and power I wanted for it.

IMMORTAL VISUAL WORLD & AI

IRK: The video feels cinematic and expansive. What was your vision from the start?

Scarlett: This honestly was Mia’s vision from the start. The black sands and water were all her ideas, I just loved them. This sort of post-apocalyptic, other-worldly environment was what she proposed and being the fantasy sci-fi lover that I am, I was on board. This song was always meant to be a part of a Marvel movie. Well… until Marvel comes knocking, we sure had fun trying to make our own Immortal world.

IRK: You combine AI-generated elements with real footage. What drew you to that hybrid approach?

Scarlett: Necessity, if I’m being honest. It certainly wasn’t my idea. I didn’t even realize AI could do this sort of thing yet. I knew I wanted story but we didn’t really have live footage that we’d captured to tell one. So, my sister started the ball rolling with creating b-roll of the environment and world-building stuff, and then Joel Riley really knew I was disappointed that we didn’t have more “story” elements for the music video so he started playing around with AI generators and the rest is history. We ended up with this crazy cool hybrid video that was better than I could’ve asked for. My inner nerd is so excited about it. I know it’s not perfect but I actually think that’s one of my favorite parts about it.

IRK: How did using AI help you express something that felt just out of reach in the physical world?

Scarlett: AI opens up the ability to make your daydream visuals exist… you know, until you have that Marvel/DC/WB movie budget. It’s actually really cool what AI is already capable of. I’m still not 100% sure how I feel about AI. I’m sort of all over the place on the subject, but I do know that it literally opened up a whole new world for Immortal that we couldn’t have created without that tool.

IRK: Can you tell us about the environment you chose to shoot in, and how it shaped the atmosphere of the video?

Scarlett: We shot in an excavation-type site of “Black Sands” which we intended to make feel like it was another planet. We then used AI to create additional visuals incorporating that environment and showing it respond and come to life as a result of the music. Or at least that’s sort of the idea of the song, a world of stone and sand that slowly is awakening as the song progresses. As secondary footage we also shot in a black-water bathtub and in a studio covered in pearls to give a more “celestial” vibe. We chose these visual environments for their other-worldly textures. Things that sort of define a world are their earth, air, and water qualities, so we put our own spin on those aspects.

IRK: You live both in music and in a very physical, disciplined world as an athlete. How does that relationship between body and mindset influence a song like “Immortal”?

Scarlett: For me fitness isn’t a purely physical discipline. Crazy, right? Like yes, technically it is. But it’s also a mental and emotional discipline. It allows me to feel in control of my ship, where my body, in this case, is my ship.

The body doesn’t just wake up in the morning and want to pick up heavy weights. I’m the one telling it to. And it thrives as a result. I’ve watched so many people take back control of their life by taking back control of their body and for many people that journey can start with working out.

Working out builds physical toughness, yes, but it also builds mental and emotional toughness and that trifecta is a powerful one to have in your back pocket.

IRK: The energy of the song feels almost kinetic. Did you imagine it as something people could move to, train to, or draw strength from physically?

Scarlett: The original goal of this song was exactly that. I want a song someone would workout to. Simple as that. The rest is just an elaboration on that theme.

IRK: What is the one idea behind “Immortal” that you hope people feel, even if they can’t explain it

Scarlett: I hope people hear this song and know it is about them.

IRK: What comes after such a powerful song?

Scarlett: Sorry. You’ll have to wait and find out.

One day when I was barely two my mom let me push her out of her bedroom. She was curious so she ran outside the house so she could watch me through the window. I climbed up on a chair by her vanity and started putting on her makeup. I loved playing dress up as a kid. Putting on my mom's sequin tube tops and high heeled shoes and then putting on a dance show in the lobby or the restaurant of the hotel/residence we lived in. It was the best childhood ever. Dress-up, dancing, playing with barbies, and drawing were my favorite things to do. I have not changed one bit today. If I am creating I am happy.

Now I am in Paris for the second time in my life and I am having a ball playing with my partner in crime Julien Crouigneau. We founded IRK Magazine together in 2015 and we are proud to collaborate with some amazing artists, and influencers.

We are also a photography duo under the pseudonym French Cowboy. We love to tell stories and create poetic images that are impactful.
