James Turrell has just unveiled a masterpiece with At One, a stunning exhibition featuring 32 exclusive artworks at Gagosian Le Bourget. It is the largest exhibition dedicated to Turrell’s work in over 25 years, presenting a world where light becomes a tangible presence, defying easy description. In his signature style, Turrell transforms light into a living entity, one that alters perception, shapes space, and dissolves physical boundaries. The viewer is no longer just an observer but becomes an active participant in At One, suspended between visibility and invisibility, sensation and disorientation.
The exhibition features two major new installations. The first is Ganzfeld, an experience akin to stepping into the heart of a cloud—where edges, depth, and even time seem to vanish. Inside the all-white pavilion, visitors are immersed in waves of colored light generated by LEDs. The effect is more than visual; it is deeply spatial, creating a sensation of almost losing oneself in the light. The second major installation, Either or, from Turrell’s wedgework series, pushes the boundaries of light further. Upon entering, the room is so dark that even your own feet disappear from view, only to be followed by a sudden shift into a space illuminated with LED-powered light. Here, the colors appear so vivid and solid that you feel you could reach out and touch them. It’s light like you’ve never experienced before—light that bends, occupies space, and tricks the eye into perceiving forms where none exist.
Beyond these installations, At One offers a wide array of works that explore Turrell’s fascination with light and space across multiple decades and mediums. A particular highlight is the Elliptical Glass Series, a collection of illuminated glass panels embedded in the walls. These panels, with their ever-changing colors, create a serene and hypnotic effect. The geometric shapes, simple at first glance, take on an almost physical quality due to the radiant light. The slow transitions of color invite a meditative engagement, as each piece seems to expand and contract within the space, constantly reshaping the environment.
"Lastly, Afrum, one of Turrell's earlier works, completes the exhibition with its signature geometric light projections. In this piece, a cube of light appears to hover in mid-air, forming a three-dimensional shape crafted entirely from light. As viewers move through the space, the shape shifts—sometimes appearing flat, sometimes solid—constantly defying full definition. This playful manipulation of light highlights Turrell's profound understanding of how our minds construct reality from the simplest forms.
The exhibition runs from October 15, 2024, to March 30, 2025, at Gagosian's gallery just outside Paris. Don’t miss the chance to experience it firsthand!"
