Matter leads, thought follows. “I’m a ceramic artisan,” she begins, “specialized in jewelry and artistic objects.” She works metal and porcelain. In fact, her process rejects the sketch. Instead, the act of making comes first. “The gesture becomes the impulse,” she says. “That’s what shapes the work.” This is creation without premeditation. Moreover, it’s a conscious return to the essential, to feeling before form.

JORDANE SOMVILLE: WHY EARTH, WHY TEXTURE, WHY NOW
Spontaneity and texture over perfection. Somville speaks of clay like a co-conspirator. “It lets me explore freely. It’s smooth, or it’s textured. It adapts.” Above all, it allows her to listen, to nature, to the surface of things, to instinct. “I come back to the surrealists, the dadaists,” she adds. Accordingly, her focus is not on the perfect line, but on the vivid trace. Ultimately, it’s about reconnecting with the raw act of expression.

RITUALS, TRACES, TRANSFORMATION
Each piece begins with a walk. Somville collects surface memories. A wall, a bark, a floor tile. “I archive these traces using gum paste or paper and pencil,” she explains. Later, at the studio, those impressions resurface, reborn in porcelain or metal. Consequently, no two pieces are alike. Each one recalls a walk, a trip, a gesture. Sometimes, they feel sculptural. Other times, intimate. Always, they carry something personal.

Wearable sculptures, or sculptural jewels? “Both,” she answers. “They can be worn. Or displayed on a wall, or on a stand.” Without a body, the object becomes its own scene. Therefore, Somville’s jewelry doesn’t just decorate. Rather, it performs. It archives. It lives. Indeed, it challenges how we see adornment, not as accessory, but as presence.
