Marcela Lopez: Where Nature Meets Art in Wearable Wonders

Marcela Lopez is a Colombian-born artist and designer who has been crafting unique, eco-friendly jewelry since relocating to South Florida in 2017. Her work seamlessly blends the beauty of nature with modern design, resulting in pieces that are both striking and sustainable.

Drawing inspiration from the natural world, Marcela Lopez’s creations often feature elements like anatomical hearts and oceanic themes. She employs plant-based resins and low-energy 3D printing techniques to minimize environmental impact, ensuring that each piece is as kind to the planet as it is beautiful.

Marcela Lopez designs jewelry with bold colors and intricate details, turning each item into a statement piece. Despite their elaborate appearance, her creations are lightweight and comfortable for everyday wear.

Her commitment to sustainability extends beyond materials; she utilizes sunlight to cure her resin pieces, reducing electricity consumption. This dedication to eco-conscious practices has earned her a loyal following, with customers praising the uniqueness and quality of her work.

Who do you imagine wearing your pieces? Do you design with a specific muse or personality in mind?

I always imagine myself wearing them. If I would love to wear that piece of jewelry, then I make it  with confidence. And regarding muses, yes of course. I imagine confident, independent, and kind women who express their artistic side by boldly wearing unconventional clothing and accessories.

What defines your brand’s philosophy? Does your work reflect a particular perspective or artistic bias?

Yes, definitely. My work is deeply influenced by nature, art, and architecture. These are my three creative pillars. I am inspired by the organic forms found in nature, the expressive details of art, and the structural precision of architecture. From this fusion, an aesthetic idea that seeks balance is born.

In addition, I have a clear commitment to the environment: I work with 3D resin printing, choosing processes and materials that minimize ecological impact. For me, design should not only be beautiful, but also conscious.  Each piece of jewelry is a mini-sculpture designed to be worn with intention, tell a story, and create a connection.

How do you create your jewelry pieces? Walk us through your design process, from the first idea to the final form.

I come up with an idea, then I start designing in 3D design software. Once I have the design style I want, I print it. The piece is cleaned and cured with sunlight, then polished to remove any traces of the supports used during the 3D printing process. After all that, then I begin painting  layers until I reach the desired final details.

Where can I explore and purchase your collections?

On my Instagram @marcelalopezart and my website.

Where do you work from, and how does your environment inspire your designs?

My studio is at my parents’ house. I live nearby, so my studio is close to my home and a good way to be close to them.  It’s a very peaceful place with four cats, so I feel very comfortable there. That inspires me to feel supported, creative, safe, and most importantly calm.

What sparks your creativity? Do materials, textures, emotions, or personal stories guide your vision?

Many things inspire me to create and give me ideas: being on the beach, walking down the street and seeing the shapes of everything around me, traveling, movies, characters in books, the birds and animals that come to my yard, the butterflies that hatch in the workshop’s garden, lots of things. I’m Latina, so I come from a culture full of colors and sounds. I think that’s where my inclination to make my pieces cheerful and colorful comes from.

How long does it take you to complete a piece?

I don’t have a specific timeframe for each piece; my pieces are all made by utilizing natural UV light so it depends a lot on the sun and the complexity of the piece. If the weather is cloudy then the process becomes much slower, drying the layers of paint and curing the resin. But a piece never takes less than three days to be ready.

Do you enjoy combining your pieces? If so, what are your favorite ways to style them together?

Well, if it’s combining the same tones and shapes, then not really. I really like combining things that don’t match, putting many different pieces together, and creating new styles.

Which one piece from any of your collections would you keep forever and why does it stand out?

I have a pair of earrings that could be that piece. They’re ultra-light, very easy to wear, and I love the color combination. They’re neon red with turquoise beads around them and a small black touch of paint here and there. I am almost always wearing them .

Do you see your jewelry as wearable art, fashion, or both? What role does form and function play in your creations?

I consider them more like wearable art. I see fashion as more closely tied to seasons and trends, and I create my ideas without being guided by these factors. They are mini sculptures meant to be worn and you don’t need to wait for a specific season, occasion or place to show them off; you wear them because you love them and want to have them with you.
