The Martin Margiela Retrospective

Martin Margiela has always stayed out of the media attention. He has not given any interviews, nor do people really know what he looks like. Margiela has not been spotted hanging out at the fabulous parties, sharing a glass of champagne with the crème de la crème of the fashion world. Through the years, despite the absence of his physical presence, his designs have been and always will be a point of discussion. Martin Margiela is known for his non-traditional style and innovative tailoring. He was one of the first designers who started recycling. He repurposed old fur coats and created mullet wigs. During the ‘50s he showed over-dyed ball gowns, layered over jeans.

Retrospective at Paris Galliera

Margiela held most of his fashion shows in unexpected places such as a car parking lot, an abandoned metro station, or a derelict supermarket. The retrospective at Paris Galliera is curated in a unique way to get to know the designer and his work. Whether you are a long-time admirer of his work or new to fashion, most of your questions will be answered. The exhibition is like a maze, starting from the year 1989 with his early designs. It guides the viewer through the years with video installations and fan rooms. These are filled with pieces from Maison Margiela, sketches, copies of press clippings, and media leading up to 2009 with his latest work.

The exhibition is held at the Palais Galliera from the 3rd of March until 15th of July 2018, from Tuesday to Sunday 10h00 until 18h00.
