Spiritum Paris: The Spiritual Side of Perfumery

Spiritum Paris: A journey within
What if perfume were not simply about seduction, but also about reconnecting with oneself? This idea lies at the heart of Spiritum Paris, a fragrance house where scent meets spirituality, introspection, and numerology.
The story of the house, however, began not with a business plan or a marketing strategy, but with a journey to Peru. In 2020, during a spiritual and shamanic retreat in the heart of the Amazon, Jonathan Dufour, founder of Spiritum Paris, underwent an experience that profoundly transformed the way he perceived fragrance. Amid ritual chants and ceremonies, three scents left a particularly strong impression on his memory: sandalwood, incense, and sage. They would later become the olfactory thread running through his creations.
Back in France, one conviction became clear: rather than creating yet another perfume house, he wanted to imagine fragrances capable of carrying an intention and accompanying the wearer on a more personal journey. With Spiritum Paris, perfume becomes an invisible language. It is somewhere between “vibration, emotion, and self-discovery”.
An Interview with Spiritum Paris Founder Jonathan Dufour
For IRK Magazine, Spiritum Paris founder Jonathan Dufour reflects on the origins of the fragrance house, the influence of spirituality and numerology on his creative process, and shares his vision of perfumery as a truly introspective experience.
IRK: The name “Spiritum” immediately sparks curiosity. What is the story behind it, and what does it represent to you?
Jonathan Dufour: It comes from the Latin spiritus, meaning breath or spirit. I loved the idea that the name itself already carried the promise of the brand: perfume is invisible, it moves through us, almost like a breath. There is no need to explain much more the name speaks for itself.
Beyond perfume
IRK: What sets Spiritum Paris apart from other niche fragrance houses?
Jonathan Dufour: I believe we are the only fragrance house entirely dedicated to spirituality, with a collection built around numerology at the heart of it all. For me, the idea goes far beyond perfume. I wanted to help people discover their life path number and understand what it means and what it can reveal about them. It comes from my own story. In Peru, I learned that my life path number was 1: the leader, the entrepreneur, the creative. When I returned from the retreat, it felt obvious to me: I wanted to make the most of what life had given me through my date of birth, embrace my Life Path 1, and explore its full potential. That is the philosophy we developed for each number in the Numerus collection. Additionally, we have a calculator on our website that helps everyone discover their own life path number.
IRK: Why have these disciplines become the guiding thread of your creative approach?
Jonathan Dufour: For me, spirituality is first and foremost about learning to know yourself. I discovered it relatively late in life, but it guided me to the point where I felt the desire, the strength, and almost a sense of mission to share that experience through Spiritum. Opening people’s minds and passing on what I have received is my way of helping the world, on my own scale. Thus, I hope to help people feel better and become more aligned with life and with one’s own path.
The language of numbers
IRK: How does numerology actually influence the creation of a fragrance?
Jonathan Dufour: I learned the meaning behind each number and then let my creativity do the rest, translating each life path into a fragrance. It is simply my own humble interpretation. What is interesting is that eight times out of ten, people tend to prefer the fragrance associated with their own life path number, although it is by no means a rule. I am a Life Path 1 myself, yet right now, I feel drawn to the energy of 8. Nothing is fixed. Beyond our life path number, we all have the numerology of the day, the month, and the year, an intimate number, and many others. Everyone can discover their different numbers on our website. There, I have developed a fairly comprehensive numerology calculator.
IRK: How do you translate a vibration, symbol, or number into an olfactory creation?
Jonathan Dufour: We start with the personality of the number its strengths and its tensions. Number 1, for example, represents leadership and renewal, which gave birth to Solar Soul. From that portrait, I create briefs that I present to the perfumers I work with, Bertrand Duchaufour and Philippe Paparella-Paris. From there, it becomes a process of back and forth, sometimes lasting several months. We continue until we achieve the olfactory vision I originally had in mind.
Scent as a ritual
IRK: Can a fragrance accompany someone on a journey of personal growth or in their search for meaning?
Jonathan Dufour: Absolutely. That is actually the very reason the house exists. A fragrance can become an anchor. I use a common base of sandalwood, sage, and incense, almost like a ritual: something you consciously choose to do, rather than simply a reflex intended to please others. Consequently, it becomes a way to honor yourself, protect yourself, and elevate yourself.
IRK: How do you see this introspective approach evolving in the years to come?
Jonathan Dufour: I believe perfumery will increasingly move away from the pure idea of seduction and towards well-being and self-knowledge. For us, that means continuing to develop our personalization tools. Furthermore, we are turning our boutique at 36 rue Jacob, in Paris’s 6th arrondissement, into a genuine place of experience. It will be almost a temple rather than simply somewhere you go to buy a bottle of perfume.
The essence of spiritum
IRK: Which fragrance would you recommend to someone discovering Spiritum Paris for the first time?
Jonathan Dufour: Shamanism, without hesitation. It is my favorite and our bestseller, as well as the olfactory memory of my shamanic retreat in Peru. It is the most authentic gateway into our universe. For a more personal discovery, I would of course recommend visiting us at the boutique or using the numerology calculator on our website. It can guide you towards the Numerus fragrance associated with your own life path.
IRK: If you had to sum up the essence of Spiritum Paris in three words, what would they be?
Jonathan Dufour: Vibration, introspection, transmission. Vibration, because every fragrance carries a specific energy, rather than simply a pleasant scent. Introspection, because we wear them to understand ourselves, and because a fragrance accompanies us through life, not simply to please others. Transmission, because beyond being a composition, every fragrance tells a story and carries a message.
For IRK Magazine, Spiritum Paris founder Jonathan Dufour reflects on the origins of the fragrance house, the influence of spirituality and numerology on his creative process, and shares his vision of perfumery as a truly introspective experience. This vision now enters a new chapter with L’Eau Spiritum, the house’s latest fragrance and the first creation signed by Jonathan Dufour himself.
