Japanese Photography Collection at the BnF Paris
Catarina Afonso
A Japanese photography collection that looks beyond the obvious. From postwar realities to strange urban encounters, these images reveal Japan through restless and deeply personal perspectives.
On 30 September, the Bibliothéque nationale de France (BnF) will present “Scenes, Signs, Sensations”. This Japanese photography collection spans eight decades, from 1945 to 2025. Bringing together around 100 artists, including internationally recognised figures, it presents 300 works comprising 250 photographic prints and 50 rare books.
The BnF collection contains nearly 4,000 Japanese photographic prints by around 200 artists and photojournalists. The Department of Prints and Photography holds the collection. Japanese photographers who settled in France also helped develop it. These collaborations began during the second half of the 20th century.
“Scenes, Signs, Sensations” explores several themes and aesthetic movements. The exhibition depicts rural and urban life alongside Japanese festivals and traditions. Many works also feel theatrical, playful, and poetic. In particular, featured photographers include Daido Moriyama, Eikō Hosoe, Ken Domon, Hiroshi Hamaya, Shōji Ueda and Rinko Kawauchi.
The six thematics
“Scenes, Signs, Sensations” is divided into six major themes. “Facing Reality” documents postwar Japan following the atomic bombings. “Strange Everyday Life” explores the poetry and strangeness hidden within ordinary life. Meanwhile, “Staged Bodies” presents the expressive world of traditional Japanese theatre.
Additionally, “Hello Paris!” features Japanese photographers who travelled to France during the 20th century. Many chose Paris for study and artistic creation. “Calligraphies of the World” draws on calligraphy and printmaking traditions. Its works find inspiration in nature’s subtle, organic lines. Finally, “Sensory and Intangible” encourages a physical and immediate perception of nature.
“Scenes, Signs, Sensations” runs until 31 January 2027. This Japanese photography collection remains open until 31 January 2027. The exhibition takes place at BnF François-Mitterrand, Gallery 2, Quai François-Mauriac, Paris 13th. Full-price admission is €15, while reduced admission is €10.
